Our friend Tony

We met Tony for the first time in 2019. He had returned from Barbados and was having further hip replacement surgery in Newcastle and recuperating in Clara Vale with Carolyn. Despite the traumas and sadness he had recently undergone in Barbados. our first and abiding impression of him was of his friendliness, his smile and his positivity.
We were able to help him move into his flat at Abbey Court before Covid restrictions took place. Throughout the restrictions of 2020 we were able to get to know him better, meeting outside, sometimes in the sunshine on benches or even walking with him as far as Sele Park in Hexham. Tony quickly became a friend to us. He was interested in so many things. He was well travelled and enjoyed talking about his travels, about his friends and family in Barbados and his time working abroad.
Tony took an avid interest in current affairs as well as sport and his walk to buy his paper was part of his daily routine. It also added to his step count! He set himself targets for his daily walks and tried hard to achieve these. Tony was an avid puzzler. Cryptic crossword puzzles, hard sudoku, and of course Wordle were an intrinsic part of his daily routine. Wordle allowed him to touch base with his family most days and we can safely say Tony was competitive! He enjoyed, Bridge, Scrabble and when he was able to, chess.
We shared an enjoyment of classical music and he enjoyed the Piano Greats series of concerts at The Sage, as well as Northern Symphonia concerts and concerts at Queens Hall in Hexham.
Tony embraced the opportunities returning to England offered him. He quickly mastered bus timetables and travelled to Newcastle as well as Clara Vale and Great Whittington. He enjoyed sport as well as politics and current affairs, Radio 3, his talking books and finding musical performances on You Tube. He also enjoyed keeping Alexa very firmly under control!
He gained so much pleasure getting to better know his family of nephews, their wives and his great nephews too and loved updating us on house moves, new jobs and new kittens!
Tony was a lovely man and a good friend and we miss him.
